Anticamente definita Plagianum, Praiano contribuì alle fortune della Repubblica Marinara di Amalfi e, in epoca angioina, accrebbe la sua importanza come testimonia la Torre Assiola, detta la Sciola, forse la più bella torre di guardia del litorale costruita da Carlo I nel 1278. Oltre allo stupendo mare di Marina di Praia e alle suggestive grotte di Suppraiano e dell'Africana, la cittadina e il suo territorio offrono al visitatore infiniti motivi di interesse architettonici e artistici, dalla chiesa di San Luca Evangelista con tele attribuite a Giovanni Bernardo Lama, il prezioso busto argenteo (1696) del Santo patrono, il paliotto dell'altare maggiore (fine 1600) il cui disegno è realizzato in “sgagliola“ con colori naturali, resine e intaglio alla chiesa di San Gennaro con cupola maiolicata e, all'interno, preziosi altari.
Quest'ultima sorge a Vettica Maggiore, ovvero la parte bassa del paese, dove nei secoli si sono sviluppate attività di pastorizia e agricoltura che si aggiungevano a quelle marinare di Praiano, la parte bassa. Così si presenta ancora oggi questo angolo di paradiso, un luogo in cui in breve tempo si passa dalla spiaggia ai 364 metri di quota di Tre Pizzi, alle pendici del monte Sant'Angelo, dove vi consigliamo di visitare la chiesa di Santa Maria a Castro con il grande affresco della taumaturgica Madonna delle Grazie e l'annesso convento di San Domenico.
A Praiano ognuno può trovare la propria dimensione per una vacanza perfetta, piacevoli passeggiate fra scale e stradine impreziosite da artistiche edicole votive, le opere d'arte contemporanea di Sol LeWitt, la leggendaria discoteca Night Club L'Africana oppure il trekking lungo i sentieri costieri resi unici da magici paesaggi e da vedute uniche, prima fra tutte il tramonto sui faraglioni di Capri godibile da Vettica. Le escursioni, sempre estremamente gradevoli, diventano davvero straordinarie in occasione degli eventi organizzati dal progetto I Suoni degli Dei (www.isuonideglidei.com): 1 ora e 30 di cammino lungo il Sentiero degli Dei e poi, in un luogo incantevole, affacciato sui Monti Lattari, gli emozionanti concerti di musicisti di fama nazionale e internazionale sul sagrato della chiesa di Santa Maria a Castro e tra i ruderi di antiche abitazioni rupestri.
