Russia increases number of cruise missiles 30 times

The number of cruise missiles in the Russian army has increased 30 times in the past six years. An article posted on the Krasnaya Zvezda (Red Star) newspaper of the Russian Armed Forces says that Russia has had a breakthrough in supplying long-range precision weapons, such as Iskander-M tactical missile systems, as well as submarines and surface ships armed with Caliber missiles. As a result, the number of land, sea and air-based carriers has increased by more than 12 times, while the number of high-precision cruise missiles has grown by more than 30 times. In addition, the Russian army has established special units that elaborate plans for the use of high-precision weapons and prepare flight missions for cruise missiles. "As a result, full-fledged groups of carriers of high-precision weapons have been created capable of using missiles to strike targets at a distance of up to 4,000 km," the newspaper said. In the Crimea, a self-sufficient group of forces was established. The group includes a naval base, an army corps, an aviation division and an air defense division. The Black Sea Fleet has state-of-the-art submarines and frigates armed with Caliber cruise missiles. Russia's coastal forces in the Crimea have Bal and Bastion coastal missile systems that guarantee the protection of the Crimea and secure the interests of Russia in the Black Sea region.

Russia’s sanctions against Ukraine send message to Washington

Russia's sanctions against 322 Ukrainian citizens and 68 companies come as a serious blow to the economy of Ukraine. The sanctions block non-cash funds, securities and property on the territory of the Russian Federation. They also prohibit the transfer of Ukrainian capital out of Russia. However, the Russian authorities have not sanctioned the Ukrainian oligarchs, who finance the war in the Donbass. Ukraine's top Russophobes - President Petro Poroshenko, oligarchs Igor Kolomoisky and Rinat Akhmetov do not appear on Russia's black lists either. Has Russia struck a serious blow on Ukraine indeed? We asked this question to experts.

Russia’s gold reserves exceed 2,000 tons for the first time

In the third quarter of 2018, the Bank of Russia acquired a record 92.2 tons of gold, a report from the World Gold Council (WGC) said. The report was published on Thursday, November 1. Thus, Russia's gold reserves have exceeded 2,000 tons for the first time. Presently, the Russian Central Bank accounts for more than 17 percent of world's gold and foreign exchange reserves. The cost of Russia's gold reserves based on the price of 1,214.8 dollars per troy ounce (as of October 31), is evaluated at more than 78 billion dollars. According to the report, net purchases of gold by central banks in the third quarter amounted to 148.4 tons. Russia, Kazakhstan and Turkey acquired most. In August, Dmitry Tulin, first deputy chairman of the Central Bank of Russia, said that gold remains "an absolute guarantee against legal and political risks." In May, Russia left China behind and was ranked fifth in the world in terms of gold reserves. Russia has been increasing gold reserves against the backdrop of the decline of the Russian ruble. In addition, Russia dropped out of the list of 33 largest holders of US public debt, having reduced the amount of US bonds at its disposal to 30 billion dollars in July. In August 2018, Russia's share in US government bonds dropped to $14 billion.

Russia imposes massive sanctions on Ukraine, but spares Chocolate King Poroshenko

Russia imposed economic sanctions against 322 Ukrainian citizens and 68 companies. The Kremlin hopes that the sanctions will help normalise Ukraine's relations with Russia. The decree to impose sanctions against Ukrainian natural persons and legal entities was signed by Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev to counteract unfriendly actions against Russian citizens and organisations.Russia will thus freeze bank accounts, securities and property in Russia for individuals and legal entities of Ukraine. In addition, it will not be allowed to withdraw capital outside Russia. The sanctions apply to judges of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine, deputies of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine of the 8th convocation, major Ukrainian entrepreneurs, officials of the presidential administration of Ukraine, heads of executive bodies and large Ukrainian companies, legal entities controlled by Ukraine's largest businessmen.Russia's sanctions will in particular affect Ukrainian MP Anton Gerashchenko, the leader of the Batkivshchyna party Yulia Tymoshenko, former head of the Majlis of the Crimean Tatars Mustafa Dzhemilev, chief military prosecutor of Ukraine Anatoly Matios and the son of Ukrainian President, businessman Alexei Poroshenko. The sanctions will also be imposed on chemical company Ukrhimenergo, located in the Luhansk region.Russia may lift the sanctions in the event Ukraine lifts its sanctions against Russia. Reportedly, however, Russia's sanctions list does not include Ukraine's wealthiest man Rinat Akhmetov, whose fortune was evaluated at $5.5 billion according to Forbes magazine. Akhmetov's key industrial assets are concentrated in the Donbas, from where he comes. His companies provide electricity and heat to most of Ukraine's settlements. The list of Russia's sanctions against Ukraine does not include Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and Prime Minister Vladimir Groysman. The sanctions will not affect businessman Igor Kononenko - Poroshenko's right hand and his main business partner. Poroshenko's confectionary holding Roshen does not appear on the lists either. Introducing retaliatory measures against Ukraine, the Kremlin expects Kiev to show political will to normalise relations with the Russian Federation sooner or later, presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov told reporters. When asked about the absence of Ukrainian president on Russia's black lists, Peskov said that presidents usually are not included on sanctions lists as it would be off the scale, Putin's official spokesman said. Ukraine imposed sanctions against dozens of Russian citizens after Russia reunited with the Crimea in 2014. Ukraine has been expanding its restrictions against Russia afterwards. In May 2018, the list contained the names of 1,748 Russian individuals and 756 legal entities. They are Russian MPs, Russian political parties, businessmen and their companies.

US dollar deposits in Russia in danger

The Russian Federation may abjure the US dollar in its economy. Naturally, such a move will entail serious consequences for the country. Experts in the field of economics note that the first priority objective for the Russian economy would be security. If Russia abandons the US dollar, the country should be prepared for more restrictions that will inevitably follow. Yet, the Russian government has no intention to put spokes in the wheels of those citizens, who keep their savings in US dollars. Residents of large cities of Russia will suffer in the first place. According to official information, about 80 billion dollars circulate in large Russian cities. If the government decides to abandon the dollar, the majority of Russian citizens will want to cash their bank deposits and receive their US dollar savings back. Not that long ago, it was reported that the government would have to convert people's dollar deposits in rubles against their will. According to experts' estimates, Russian banks have accumulated a total of $50 billion should the population panic, although such a scenario is unlikely. The issue of de-dollarization of the Russian economy has been the talk of the day for quite a while, but it still remains a closed book to all.

Russia to field new anti-satellites missiles for MiG-31 interceptor already soon

The United States believes that Russia has deployed  combat laser stations in space to be able to down US satellites. Military expert Viktor Murakhovsky said in an interview with Pravda.Ru that the development of airborne anti-satellite weapons was launched back during the Soviet times. "There's the MiG-31 fighter aircraft that carries such anti-anti-satellite missiles - the aircraft was developed during the Soviet era. Photos of MiG-31 fighter-interceptors armed with mass-dimensional models of anti-satellite missiles appeared a while ago, but it took the Americans about three months to react. I think that we will finish the trials within a short period of time to field the missiles soon," the expert told Pravda.Ru. "Russia is not the only country that develops such weapons. China has conducted several tests of anti-satellite arms too and shot down two or three of its old satellites. The Americans also have such weapons, for example, aerospace aircraft, such as X-37, X-36, X-43, X-47, which can also shoot  satellites down from orbit. For the time being, there are only three countries in the world that can have such weapons - United States, Russia, and the People's Republic of China."As for the placement of laser systems is space, one should understand that they cannot be deployed in space because they are too cumbersome for the purpose. Look at Russia's Peresvet mobile laser complex and the dimensions of its power plant. Look at American complexes deployed on warships or Boeing airplanes. It is clear that no one has either the power or capabilities to take such systems into space," Viktor Murakhovsky told Pravda.Ru.

Kremlin welcomes Saudi Arabia's stance on Khashoggi's murder

The Kremlin welcomes the position of the royal family of Saudi Arabia, which declared its interest in a thorough investigation into the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi. "We've heard the statement from the royal family condemning this murder, about the non-participation of the royal family to this. Everything else is a matter of investigation, which the royal family itself wants. We welcome this," said Peskov.According to Peskov, the question of whether Moscow believes the statements from Saudi monarchs about their noninvolvement in the crime is inappropriate. "There is an official statement from the King, there's also a statement from the Crown Prince. No one should have any grounds not to believe," he added. On 25 October, the King of Saudi Arabia, Salman bin Abdul-Aziz, called Vladimir Putin. During the telephone conversation with the Russian president, Saudi king announced his intention to conduct a thorough investigation into the murder of the journalist to bring criminals to justice. On October 24, Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince called the murder of opposition journalist Jamal Khashoggi a heinous crime that had no justification. Kremlin alarmed by reports about US military behind drone attack on Russia's airbase in Syria

The Kremlin found "alarming" the information about the participation of US military in targeting the drones that had attacked the Russian air base in Syria's Khmeymim, Putin's official spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on October 25.  "This is very disturbing information. There is no doubt that our military will make their conclusions. They have actually already analysed the situation and it is up to the military to clarify the details," Peskov said.  When asked about a possibility of political consequences, as well as about a possibility for the topic to be discussed during the upcoming meeting between Presidents Putin and Trump, Peskov said that "one cannot exclude this."

Russian government wants people to pay more for public transport during rush hours

Dynamic rates may appear for subway, buses and other types of public transport in Russia to make the fare cheaper during the day and more expensive during rush hours, officials with the Ministry for Transport said.  The authors of the proposal believe that such a measure would address the problem of half-empty transport in the afternoon and make morning and evening passenger traffic less intensive. Such an initiative will be beneficial to housewives, retirees and employees working on flexible schedules, representatives of the Ministry for Transport said. The officials did not specify how the move would affect the working population.

Chinese banks refuse to serve Russian clients

The issue of blocking or delaying operations of Russian companies by Chinese side has been discussed at the meeting of the subcommittee on financial cooperation between the Russian Federation and the People's Republic of China. Representatives of the People's Bank of China said that they were ready to continue transmitting information to Chinese commercial banks about the nature of existing sanctions and restrictions.  On September 15, 2018, Vladimir Danilov, a representative of the Central Bank of the Russian Federation in China, made an official announcement about the restrictions: "There are problems associated with the interpretation of third-country restrictive measures against Russia by certain Chinese banks. China's commercial banks often refer to EU and US sanctions as a reason for refusing in servicing payments to customers of Russian banks," the official said.  A Moscow-based representative of one of the largest Chinese state-owned banks believes that difficulties have occurred due to the "accumulation of information about the sanctions." According to him, Russian subsidiaries of large Chinese banks (ICBC, Bank of China, China Construction Bank, etc.) send quarterly reports on updates in the sanctions regime to Beijing, where the reports are studied and then distributed among subsidiaries as a guide to action.

Sunken section of Crimean Bridge retrieved from the sea

The railway section of the Crimean Bridge, which slid into the sea in early October, has been retrieved up to the surface.  On October 4, it was reported that a railway span of the bridge tilted and slid into the water as it was being lowered onto supports. It is believed that the incident occurred due to a technical malfunction in a jacking system. No one was hurt.  It was also reported that the incident will not affect the construction schedule.

Russian PM Medvedev speaks about sanctions against Ukraine

Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev unveiled the plans of the Russian government regarding sanctions against Ukrainian citizens. Russia and Italy annoy European Union

Diplomatic relations between Russia and Italy have been improving lately even though the EU has been unhappy with Italy's behaviour.   The lack of understanding between Italy and other EU countries has been growing. Representatives of other EU member states say that Italy spends too much. Spokespeople for the Italian government made it clear that they heard the claims, but added that the budget for the next year had been formed and Italy was not going to change anything in it.  It appears that Italy is unwilling to tolerate endless claims from the EU. Italy has lost tens of billions of euros because of Western sanctions against Russia. At the same time, it is obvious to everyone that a country that spends a lot should earn a lot too.

Putin signs decree to impose economic sanctions against Ukraine

Russia will introduce special economic measures against Ukraine because of unfriendly actions that the Ukrainian government has taken against the Russian Federation. Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree introducing new "special economic measures" against Ukraine. In accordance with the document, the sanctions are being imposed in order to protect national interests of the Russian Federation. Putin instructed the government to determine the lists of individuals and legal entities in respect of which the sanctions are to be imposed, as well as to decide what restrictions should be introduced against them. The decree has come into force from the moment of signing. However, all government bodies and local governments, as well as Russian citizens and companies were instructed to proceed from the assumption that the yet unspecified sanctions are to be imposed against the yet unspecified entities. The decree was adopted in accordance with the Law No.127 "On Measures of Counteraction (Resistance) on Unfriendly Actions of the United States of America and Other Foreign States." According to this law, in order to protect the sovereignty and interests of Russia, as well as the rights and freedoms of its citizens, the Russian authorities have the right to use countermeasures to respond to "unfriendly actions" taken by other states. Such measures include the termination or suspension of cooperation, imposition of restrictions or prohibition on the import of certain goods into Russia, as well as export of goods of Russian origin to the sanctioned country. The list of goods in both cases shall be determined by the government, but imports of vital goods, analogues of which are not produced in Russia, shall not be restricted.

Russian military men were paid before Russia reunited with Crimea

Prior to the operation to annex the Crimea, the Russian military on the peninsula had received a cash allowance. The financial of the Russian Defence Ministry had made such a decision over the fear of the blockage of financial assets on the accounts of the Russian Black Sea Fleet in Ukrainian banks, Deputy Defence Minister Tatyana Shevtsova said.According to her, since the end of February, military financiers had been closely watching the development of the situation in the Crimea and, together with large Russian banks, they had been looking for ways that would save budget money."Already in early March, Russian servicemen in the Crimea received an early monetary allowance, and a couple of weeks later all the Russian budget money in cash was collected at military pay offices and subsequently transferred to the treasury under enhanced security," the deputy minister said. The financial service organised cash support for the Black Sea Fleet through field institutions of the Bank of Russia and interrupted the financing of the Black Sea Fleet through a foreign bank. The moves ensured the timely financial support for military units stationed in the Crimea and Sevastopol, Shevtsova concluded.

Russia to use all of her might to defend Belarus if need be

Russia's Ambassador to Belarus, Mikhail Babich, said that Moscow would treat any military intervention in the affairs of Belarus as an attack on Russia. The statement from Babich came as a reaction to an announcement from US officials to deploy an army base in Poland. The ambassador believes that this is "a disturbing factor that must not be neglected."He also noted that Russia and Belarus reached absolute mutual understanding on these issues. "We have a regional grouping of troops and forces, we also have all the components that are necessary both for defence and for retaliatory attack."President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko commented on the plans of US authorities to deploy an army base in Poland by saying that they are "a mirror reflection of the border with Kaliningrad.""I won't say that they like us very much - neither you nor us, Russia and Belarus," added Lukashenko.Lukashenko said that the citizens of the two countries have no one else to count on except for each other, and assured that Russia can always rely on Belarus.

Putin ready to discuss INF Treaty issues with John Bolton

The United States is going to pull out from the Treaty on the Elimination of Intermediate-Range and Shorter-Range Missiles (INF).The news did not come as a surprise as Trump's national security adviser John Bolton had earlier insisted on such a move. Bolton also hampers the talks on the extension of the Strategic Offensive Arms Treaty (START-3).In Russia, the emergence of this information is associated with Bolton's upcoming visit to Moscow on October 22-23. According to the Kremlin, Putin is ready for the meeting. Many US politicians do not share Bolton's point of view, and military experts are confident that Russia and the USA can still settle the issue.Retired Major General Vladimir Dvorkin believes that the USA is unlikely to exit the START-3. "This agreement is beneficial for the Americans because it allows them to control Russia's nuclear triad. A recent nuclear report says that the US is ready to discuss the extension of the treaty until 2026. Trump's statement comes as another act of blackmail on the part of the United States to force Russia to recognise some of its actions related to ground tests of cruise missiles with a range of over 500 km."Dvorkin, who earlier headed the Research Institute of the Russian Ministry of Defence that studies problems of nuclear deterrence, believes that USA's claims to the Russian Federation regarding the INF Treaty "are technical in nature." According to the expert, the Americans believe that Russia has conducted tests on the launchers that look like the launchers of the Iskander complex. The Americans also believe that Russia has a missile in service that violates the INF Treaty.

Is Putin guilty of the Kerch school massacre?

Vladimir Putin said at a meeting of Valdai Discussion Club that the tragedy at the Polytechnic College in the city of Kerch was "a result of globalisation." However, he did not say who has drawn us into this globalisation."In social networks, on the Internet, we can see that whole communities being created. Everything started with well-known tragic events at schools in the United States," the President of the Russian Federation said. Well, it is easy to blame abstract "globalisation" for what happened. In fact, one may come to a completely different conclusion, and one needs to look for it in the policy of the elite, to which Mr. Putin belongs. Russia lacks youth organisations, like the ones we used to have during the Soviet times - Pioneer or Komsomol organisations. In the Soviet Union, there were no such tragedies, nor were there any security guards and metal detectors at schools - there were teachers and students instead. Sergei Komkov, President of the All-Russian Education Fund, Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences, told Pravda.Ru that the Kerch massacre came as a consequence of the educational reform which Russia had been conducting on the advice of American specialists. "We warned 15-20 years ago that a tragedy like the one that happened in Kerch would be possible in Russia by analogy with what was happening in America," the expert said. The expert referred to the book by Bel Kaufman, "Up The Down Staircase," in which the author talks about the morale at American school in the 60-70s. "I flew to the USA in the 1990s. I was observing how things were working there, and they deported me in 1997 after I told them what it would all end up with," the expert told Pravda.Ru. During the 1990s, in accordance with recommendations from Soros advisors, Russia started reforming its educational system on the American template. "They had eradicated the ideological component, the system of upbringing, and switched to the mere transfer of knowledge and skills," Sergei Komkov told Pravda.Ru.All school youth organisations were taken out of schools. In addition, on the advice of Westerners, all additional education could be received for money. The reform sharply divided the youth based on the income of their parents, Sergey Komkov said in an interview with Pravda.Ru. According to the expert, an army of hopeless children had appeared in Russia already in the late 1990s. Children did not know what to do as their parents were doing their best to try to survive during the time of the crisis," the expert told Pravda.Ru. The system of upbringing should be restored at Russian schools as well. "The first thing we need to do is to kick all Western advisers right out. One needs to close the Higher School of Economics, because this school is a nest of American and British advisers. It was them who introduced the Unified State Exam system, the testing system, the system of sex education - they are trying to prove it to us that the most important thing is the system of education, rather than upbringing.""Security guards cannot protect children. They can be protected if they get engaged in creative work, hiking trips, including to sites of military glory, if they sing in the choir, learn how to dance, how to draw, if they are busy with research activities and history studies. In this case, an idea to grab a rifle and go to school to kill other kids will not occur to them," the expert told Pravda.Ru. "We must have our own brains to do everything the Russian way and avoid the American template," Sergei Komkov told Pravda.Ru.

"There was a duel, I remember it very clearly, there was the word 'duel' there," Navalny tweeted. The conflict between Zolotov and Navalny sparked after the publication of Navalny's investigation into procurement for the Russian National Guards in late August. Navalny said in the report that after the right to supply products to the Russian National Guards was assigned to only one supplier -  the Crimean meat-packing plant "Friendship of Peoples."
